OpenAI’s September 9 announcement distinguishes two roles: Christiano joins the Foundation board, while serving as a non-voting observer on the OpenAI Group PBC board. He will work on the Foundation’s Safety and Security Committee alongside its chair, Zico Kolter.
What should you keep in mind?
Christiano previously led alignment research at OpenAI and founded the Alignment Research Center. The announcement is a governance change; it does not by itself demonstrate that model risks have been resolved.
